I woke up<br \/>\nbefore everyone else one morning and read it. Two parts reminded me of Cher\u2019s comments of late:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energy Levels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been arguing with a friend and Cher appreciator about Cher\u2019s energy level in live performances. I\u2019ve been arguing how unfair it is for him to<br \/>\ncompare Cher to her younger self. He then brought up Mick Jagger as an example of an energetic performing septuagenarian.<br \/>\nI responded, Mick Jagger doesn\u2019t have any feet problems and hasn\u2019t been through<br \/>\nmenopause or Chronic Fatigue. I wasn&#39;t getting anywhere. Thankfully Mick Jagger himself came to my rescue<br \/>\nin this article (he also mimics Cher pleasure<br \/>\nover what key they\u2019re still singing in):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cWhen I\u2019m on stage,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019m not just singing. I want<br \/>\nto do a performance, as well, so that\u2019s waving my arms around and running<br \/>\naround, and I\u2019m dancing. That takes 50 percent of your breath power, so my<br \/>\nchallenge is how to balance that with my vocals. You don\u2019t want to be out of<br \/>\nbreath when you do the ballads. That\u2019s a &#0160;kind of balancing act. I have things that I<br \/>\ncan do at home for keeping my voice together. I do karaoke singing, and I write<br \/>\nsongs a lot, and I do demos and sing them. I\u2019m very lucky in a lot of ways,<br \/>\nbecause\u2014I do all the Rolling Stones songs in all the same keys as they always<br \/>\nwere in, so my higher end is still there, maybe better than it was, because I<br \/>\ndon\u2019t smoke anymore, and I don\u2019t drink as much and whatever.\u201d<\/em> (May 23, 2013<br \/>\nissue, p50)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Longevity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mick Jagger was also being asked to explain his success and<br \/>\nlongevity. He has a similar response to Cher&#39;s:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c\u2026.there has been some toll\u2014though not equally<br \/>\ndistributed\u2014in the life of the Rolling Stones. But not enough to deter them, or<br \/>\nany audience, in the past 50 years. What is it that sustains that appeal?<br \/>\nAnswers Jagger, \u201cI could say just these things I usually do, but the answer is<br \/>\nthat you don\u2019t really know. Why do the Rolling Stones endure? &#0160;I always say, because they\u2019re successful.<br \/>\nBecause people still like them. However much we might like to do it for<br \/>\nourselves, if nobody wants to see you, then we probably wouldn\u2019t do it. But you<br \/>\nask me what we mean to ongoing and changing audiences, I don\u2019t know what we<br \/>\n<a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/cherscholar.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef019aff4a712b970c-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chermick\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef019aff4a712b970c\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef019aff4a712b970c-200wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 200px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"Chermick\" \/><\/a>mean. I haven\u2019t got a clue. I do think our sort of longevity adds an extra sort<br \/>\nof layer to the appeal. Adding a patina to the piece of old furniture. Because<br \/>\nyou\u2019ve been around for 50 years, it does add this kind of \u2026this luminosity, if<br \/>\nyou want. But in some ways, it\u2019s kind of a disadvantage, because then you\u2019re<br \/>\ntempted to rely on it, you know?\u201d<\/em> (May 23, 2013 issue, p 53)\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Incidentally, my dream of seeing Cher<br \/>\non the cover of <em>Rolling Stone Magazine<\/em> is moot. The articles are now truncated to<br \/>\nkeep up with the bathroom audience; but I still have my <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em><br \/>\ndream. &#0160;I just saw a rerun of Bruno Mars<br \/>\non SNL from last year. He was freaking amazing in so many ways. Cher<br \/>\ncould so do \u201ca Justin Timberlake\u201d on that show too and be both host and musical guest. She could<br \/>\nshow them she\u2019s been there, done that and can do it all again in a week.
