Whitney Houston, Donna Summer and honorary diva Luther Vandross should all still be with us.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been out of town for the last two weeks so I\u2019ve been unable to post my tribute to Donna Summer. She died from cancer just as I was leaving on my trip. I drove from Santa  Fe to Los Angeles, singing all my iPod\u2019s Donna Summer at the top of my lungs all across the desert.<\/p>\n<p>For many girls (and gay boys) my age, Donna Summer\u2019s double greatest hits album <em>On the Radio<\/em> was one of the first albums we ever owned. Staring at the cover, I could never get over how uncomfortable and stiff her pose looked on top of that jukebox.  <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/cherscholar.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0176151611aa970c-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"35025889\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef0176151611aa970c\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0176151611aa970c-150wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 150px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"35025889\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the album, each anthemic disco track ran into the next, which was great for \u201can evening with Donna Summer\u201d but tragic for stealing out songs for a mix tape.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know a single pre-teen immune to the charms of \u201cMacarthur Park,\u201d who didn\u2019t re-enact it\u2019s melodrama alone in their room with a jump rope handle for a microphone.<\/p>\n<p>As older girls in college, we all identified with the unusual oddity of \u201cEnough is Enough,\u201d the marathon of dueting between Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer. On a kitsch level, it was a bonding moment of bitchy girl power.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years connected to LA gave me a better appreciation for \u201cSunset People\u201d and \u201cDim All the Lights\u201d ranks right up with Rita Coolidge\u2019s \u201cAll Alone\u201d for sultry scene setting. I never tire of the toot toot heey beep beeps of \u201cBad Girls\u201d or the duet of \u201cHeaven Knows\u201d&#8230;and wasn\u2019t \u201cOn the Radio\u201d the anthem of our ever-hopeful teenage love lives? The sentiment is so innocent it\u2019s almost painful if it wasn\u2019t so lovely.<\/p>\n<p>I even remember, with some amount of preserved disgust, Steve Allen doing a reading of the lyrics of \u201cHot Stuff\u201d on some awards show in the late 1970s. Although reading inane pop lyrics was part of his shtick, I was irritated by it seeming so condescending, square and\u2026a bit humorless.<\/p>\n<p>Cher tweeted her memories of dancing at Studio 54 in the late 1970s: <em>&quot;I remember &#39;Last Dance&#39; ended my nights at Studio 54! By that song, I was drenched! Hair too!&quot;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Cher was dancing in Studio 54, I was hearing \u201cLast Dance\u201d inevitably as the final song of the high school dance. It was a melancholy moment every time, for if the boy crush of the season had not asked you to dance all night, this was his last chance. The song was literally calling him out. What a Cinderella moment we were all waiting for. But he never did. You loved the song but hated what it meant.<\/p>\n<p>But in your bedroom fantasies, blasting the album on the record player while you were all alone after school, the boy crush did ask you to dance which made the song magical. You could play Donna Summer so loud you could hear it in every room of the house. In each room you were the diva singing on a stage to the universe.<\/p>\n<p>In 1983 \u201cShe Works Hard for the Money\u201d was an early MTV staple. It was played so often, you grew tired of seeing it. Last week, my friends and I struggled to find a full-length version of it on the youtubes.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/cherscholar.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef017615161451970c-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: left;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cats\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef017615161451970c\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef017615161451970c-150wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 150px; margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" title=\"Cats\" \/><\/a>In 1984, Donna released <em>Cats Without Claws<\/em> which had The Drifters ballad \u201cThere Goes My Baby\u201d which didn\u2019t do so well on the charts but I loved to belt it out in my bedroom when it came on MTV and my high school friend sang it at the high school follies show. I loved the whole album: \u201cIt\u2019s Not the Way,\u201d \u201cEyes,\u201d \u201cMaybe It\u2019s Over\u201d and the spiritual ballad \u201cForgive Me.\u201d Although I didn\u2019t identify myself as Christian, I was still deeply moved by its brave spiritual message of self honesty to \u201clove more than I accuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later in the summer after I graduated high school, I remember loving the single \u201cOnly the Fool Survives\u201d(1987 from the album <em>All Systems Go<\/em>) she did with Mickey Thomas from Starship.<\/p>\n<p>I had my first and only chance to see Donna Summer in LA in 2005 at the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal\u2019s City Walk. I had an unabashedly good time and reviewed the show for the webzine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apeculture.com\/music\/summerdonna.htm\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Ape Culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, we don\u2019t expect our earliest MTV stars to be leaving us so soon. I am beginning to feel like the 80s-generation kids are more attached to our music stars than are older or younger generations. I don\u2019t know if this is because we were utterly consumed with pop culture growing up, with MTV, award shows and arena concerts. Music stars pervade our memories. We so identified with  <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/cherscholar.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef016767207199970b-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cher Donna Summer 2\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef016767207199970b\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef016767207199970b-200wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 200px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"Cher Donna Summer 2\" \/><\/a>those upbeat, offbeat 80s images.<\/p>\n<p>I read on the <a href=\"http:\/\/chernews.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/cher-on-donna-summer-she-was-exquisite.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Cher News<\/a> blog that Justin Timberlake has signed to play Neal Bogart in a movie called <em>Spinning Gold<\/em> about the Casablanca years: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtv.com\/news\/articles\/1671556\/justin-timberlake-spinning-gold.jhtml\">http:\/\/www.mtv.com\/news\/articles\/1671556\/justin-timberlake-spinning-gold.jhtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cher and Donna Summer are the two biggest disco divas to have shared time at Casablanca Records (see picture to the right).
