This one is by Anita Endrezze.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La Morena and Her Beehive Hairdo <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1965-1970<\/p>\n<p>The Dark One sported a beehive hairdo<br \/>\nwhere she once hid her brother Alfonso.<br \/>\nHis girlfriend had a husband who carried a switchblade<br \/>\npretty as a butterfly in his back pocket.<br \/>\nAlfonso camped out in La Morena\u2019s dusky hair<br \/>\nuntil the coast was clear, at least as far a San Pedro.<br \/>\nThen he vamoosed to Tucson<br \/>\nwhere he married a young hairdresser<br \/>\nfrom the Yaqui barrio.<\/p>\n<p>Without any family responsibilities, La Morena felt light-headed.<br \/>\nShe changed her name again. <em>Old Lady.<\/em> It was the sixties, man,<br \/>\nand she was everyone\u2019s old lady. She really dug those long-haired vets<br \/>\nfrom Nam. She wore granny boots and long paisley dresses<br \/>\nand carried a small baggie of white horse<br \/>\nin her leather fringed purse. Everyone called her<br \/>\n<em>Indian Princess<\/em> and said Cher looked just like her.<br \/>\nShe slept around, snorting coke up a straw<br \/>\nuntil she saw red stars galloping around her heart<br \/>\nand herds of tiny white horses dying in nights of Black Velvet.<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t ask her if she remembers. It was real<br \/>\nbut it wasn\u2019t true. She was living in someone else\u2019s mandala<br \/>\nbecause it was on the top-ten chart. Somewhere<br \/>\nalong the way she lost herself. It\u2019s the Yaqui Way<br \/>\nof Knowledge by Carlos Coyote-Peyote.<br \/>\nWhen we found Jesus, we held out our palms<br \/>\nfor coins, Bibles, good-looking Indian Boys.<br \/>\nShe was my sister. Kneel down, little sister, she said.<br \/>\nAnd we did, down in front of altars of bees<br \/>\nand tubes of pale lipstick, crosses made of lovers\u2019 bodies,<br \/>\nbroken shoes, floods of moons, Janis Joplin, rowdy measures<br \/>\nof life. Those summers, slab dancing and picking up guys,<br \/>\nwere the best times, she says, the <em>best.<\/em> When she was young<br \/>\nand I was just beginning my own story, my own howling<br \/>\nat the American moon.<\/p>\n<p>2000<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across another instance recently of Cher in a poem.
