What an amazing year of Cher scholarship it&#39;s been. Lots of younger writers extolling the virtues of Cher!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/apr\/04\/not-easy-to-be-joni-mitchell-fan-but-illness-devastates-me\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian: It\u2019s not always easy to be a Joni Mitchell Fan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>Although not about Cher per se, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linda Grant<\/span> has been a Joni Mitchell<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fan for over 50 years (I\u2019m 5 years away from that and I&#39;m sure some of you are more) and she&#39;s thinking about the death of her subject, how Mitchell doesn\u2019t get the credit she deserves (Dylanesque credit, specifically). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She claims Mitchell has written her emotional biography. I don&#39;t feel that so much as the fact that Cher has been a soundtrack to the physical biography, and definitely an aesthetic biography. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what I like about this article is mostly this well-written line: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPerhaps the lifelong experience of being a fan, an admirer, an acolyte or a student of an artist will turn out to have been a fluke, a small window of privilege, and from now on careers will burn up in a year or two, the experience fleeting for the adorer and the adored alike. I don\u2019t think she knows how much she\u2019s venerated. Or maybe she knows and it doesn\u2019t matter. It fulfils nothing. It makes no difference. She\u2019s as alone with her music as we are.\u201d <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully Cher in her old age has not become bitter, her tone \u201cautocratic, arrogant and angry.\u201d I worry maybe Mitchell is bitter because she\u2019s a music treasure not venerated as much as she should be, as much as Cher is starting to be, although their apples and oranges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember their moment together living under the same roof with David Geffen while Mitchell was recording her classic<em> Court and Spark<\/em> album and Cher was recording and self-conscious of, <em>Dark Lady<\/em>? Giant ships crossing in the night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Cosmo<\/em>, a magazine I love more now than when I started reading it in the 1980s, publishes a lot of strong women stuff these days, interspersed with the celebrity fluff, including this interesting article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/health-fitness\/a19378246\/beyonce-jay-z-body-language\/\">Decoding Beyonce and Jay-Z\u2019s Relationship, It\u2019s Complicated<\/a>.\u201d&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It r<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eminds me of two things: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1) Beyonc\u00e9 does the accent thing and I never noticed that before. I wish Ch\u00e9r still did. <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d484200d-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pink\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d484200d img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d484200d-300wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 300px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"Pink\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2) I wish this sort of laser-focus existed back in late 1972 through 1974 with Sonny &amp; Cher were &quot;decoupling,&quot; this decoding of the body positions: interlaced fingers, embraces.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This also reminds me of the ubiquitous breakout box of the 1980s and early 90s Cher magazine interviews, the list of Cher\u2019s husbands and boyfriends with their pictures and maybe a sassy Cher quote about each of them. You couldn\u2019t get through a magazine article without that breakout box of boyfriends. Thankfully, this era is over. But I can\u2019t help but feel Katy Perry and Tyler Swift are in competition to have the longest breakout box of boyfriends to this day, as if they\u2019re somehow modeling after Cher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recently watched a video of Pinks Funhouse Tour of 2009 and it\u2019s got Cher\u2019s Farewell Tour written all over it&#8230;although you might argue she does it even better. But it begs the question, remembering of those horrid reviews Cher got for \u201ccircus-i-fying\u201d her concerts, why is this the style <em>de<\/em> rigueur now with young pop women.&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4c783a7200b-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: left;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Darkhaireds\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4c783a7200b img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4c783a7200b-300wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 300px; margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" title=\"Darkhaireds\" \/><\/a>Cosmo<\/em> also did a great essay this month by Shannon Carlin about the evil villains of Disney movies. Remember Cher\u2019s lament that all the characters who looked like her in Disney movies were the evil women villains? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlin says \u201cpretty princess types pitted against vengeful, aging antagonists. There\u2019s no question who little girls are supposed to root for.\u201d But aside from all the murderous plots and kidnappings,&#0160; \u201cat least [they] take action instead of waiting around for someone [ahem, prince charming] to rescue [them].\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could argue the raven-haired might have opted for that chance had they been offered it. Also,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cher was rescued by her prince and he did saver her from poverty (into the stratosphere)&#8230;but then what? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that is the sublime part of the Cher story. Another important point: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she never went villain.&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlin goes on to say that \u201ccomplicated women are far more captivating than one-note damsels in distress. They\u2019re just legit more human&#8211;even when they\u2019re half octopus.\u201d&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She then calls the Seven Dwarfs \u201cgroody men\u201d which is entirely unfair. Happy and Bashful were real charmers.&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My favorite Disney movies was <em>The Rescuers<\/em> (because it was scary) and this action-still for years has been my icon at work. I feel it represents all three aspects of my personality: a somewhat misguided and insane Medusa, a very content little bear and a completely confused little girl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d4e4200d-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Madame-medusa-top-disney-villains-la-11-1-12\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d4e4200d img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d4e4200d-250wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 250px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Madame-medusa-top-disney-villains-la-11-1-12\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em> did a piece about how &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/cher-stands-alone-800801\/\">Cher Stands Alone<\/a>&quot; by Rob Sheffield. He calls her&#0160;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/cher-stands-alone-800801\/\"><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe one-woman embodiment of the whole gaudy story of pop music.\u201d And this is very funny: he depicts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe battle of Cher versus Time turned out to be a mismatch. It\u2019s Time that has trouble turning back Cher.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He says,&#0160;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are no careers remotely like hers\u2026.she\u2019s been on her farewell tour so long, it\u2019s old enough to vote.\u201d He says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she invented red carpets and infomercials. &quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People said she couldn\u2019t sing, yet she always sounds like herself&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s part of every pop story,&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Dondoros wrote about &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/entertainment\/2019\/04\/six-decades-of-cher-six-facts-you-may-not-know-or-remember.html\">Six decades of Cher<\/a>&quot; and said, &quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cher\u2019s creative risks have foreshadowed music industry trends.&quot; He mentions her Wall of Sound records (not really risky but trendy) and auto-tune (continues to be controversial).&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d67a200d-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pop-shapeshift\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d67a200d img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4a2d67a200d-400wi.png?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 400px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"Pop-shapeshift\" \/><\/a>Nick Levine produced, &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/j5w8jb\/the-guide-to-getting-into-cher-pop-shapeshifter\">A Guide to Getting into Cher, Pop Shapeshifter<\/a>&quot; with original art by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tara Jacoby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He notes her &quot;majestic voice&quot; and ability to &quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reinvent herself repeatedly over the decades without losing her quintessential Cher-ness.&quot; He notes correctly that Sonny &amp; Cher were the &quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family-friendly faces of the hippie movement&quot; and that they showed in the 1970s &quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flawless comic timing&quot; and &quot;firecracker duets&quot; and back to her voice, &quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s easy to forget what a dazzlingly distinctive vocalist she actually is.&quot; (thank you)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are even suggested playlists for all her eras: kitschy folk-pop Cher, middle-of-the-road pop Cher, disco diva Cher, soft-rock Cher, (which he says, &quot;made a strange kind of sense at the time&#8230;her voice wasn\u2019t overshadowed by the cheesy metal riffs of 1989, camped-up Bon Jovi&quot; which &quot;essentially, appealed to your Dad and queer uncle alike&quot;) and wig-wearing, vocoder-loving dance-pop Cher (which he calls &quot;Cher of Light&quot;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He calls &quot;Turn Back Time&quot; , a song that taught us that no key change is too shameless.&quot; (thank you again)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Nashville Scene, Ashley Spurgeon writes about how<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nashvillescene.com\/music\/features\/article\/21045333\/how-cher-continues-her-iconic-reign\"> Cher continues to be an icon<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&quot;At the disgusting, decrepit age of 43, [Cher] had the audacity to look really sexy and imply she was going to bone a boatful of sailors in the [&quot;Turn Back Time&quot;] music video\u2026.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authenticity is the byword of the age, and for all creative arts, music is held to its absolute highest standard\u2026.but the problem with centering this definition&#8230;in the realm of musical creativity is that it completely forgets that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entertainers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exist.&#0160; The Authentic Entertainer is an explosion, usually of glitter. Artifice is the point. And Cher is as authentic an entertainer as has ever graced the stage.&quot; <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(THANK YOU)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spurgeon even acknowledges Cher&#39;s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cSoCal\u201d plastic surgery and her AutoTune and only says:<em> \u201cThe sheer audacity, to this day!\u201d<\/em> Indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spurgeon continues, <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she was always going to tell those who had it coming to go fuck themselves&#8230;.criticism can go fuck itself. She has been an LGBT icon for decades, and no small part of that work involves telling all manner of bigots [and bullies] to go fuck themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think I&#39;m hyperventilating I&#39;m enjoying this so much.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&quot;Basically, Cher has taken ever-more-insistent demands for authenticity and reflected them back in her own bedazzled, witty and wry image (not unlike her peer Dolly Parton). She&#39;s &quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transgressed the laws of celebrity&#8230;<\/span>in the past few years, though, she has ascended to an even more rarefied level of the celebrity stratosphere.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>She continues,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&quot;Part of the reason I think Cher is so beloved right now\u2014especially for people whose lived memory of Cher begins just 20 years ago, with \u201cBelieve\u201d\u2014is that even her past makes sense through a modern cultural lens. She was famous for being famous decades before anybody knew what a Kardashian was. She has fluidly toyed with gender norms and sexual mores until they\u2019ve looked stiflingly pass\u00e9, and she has always been brazen about her hustle. She is very good at using emoji. And above all things, she evinces an odd combination of over-the-top artifice and gritty authenticity. Of course she\u2019s had work done. But, as she so characteristically put it in an interview montage that aired right before her Kennedy Center Honor, \u201cIf I wanna put my tits on my back, that\u2019s nobody\u2019s business but my own.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&quot;Cher has always presented androgyny as a source of power. It\u2019s part of the reason she\u2019s always had such a devoted queer following. She was also one of the earliest proponents of drag culture\u2026.Cher would time and again wield&#0160;this kind of gender fluidity&#0160;as a superpower.&quot;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoladz calls Laverne a proto-Kristen Wiig character and toward the end of the piece says this very funny thing: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&quot;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time her sparing partner wasn\u2019t sonny, Peter Bogdanovich, or a nonbelieving recorde executive, but mortality itself&#8211;and Cher seemed to have it in a headlock.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>And as that article referenced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Chers-Tattooed-Ass-106838299367586\/\">&#0160;<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Chers-Tattooed-Ass-106838299367586\/\">Cher\u2019s ass does indeed have a Facebook page<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4c787b5200b-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cherbillboard\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4c787b5200b img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef0240a4c787b5200b-300wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 300px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"Cherbillboard\" \/><\/a>And this article came out recently about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interviewmagazine.com\/culture\/a-visual-history-of-las-greatest-rock-n-roll-billboards-robert-landau?fbclid=IwAR1w1AN5Ez0qWGaH_z9hp0OtYtYMyBALQ06xvrIXWqVLhai09ElRDTLOrWM\">LA\u2019s Greatest Billboards<\/a>. And just look at the company she keeps here. A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd she&#39;s the only woman!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A fan recently posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rDkTlzvgNBg&amp;fbclid=IwAR2MMahuU8UOZpa_LDtn1A1l2E8gMVU9ldJgxyBdnhgoVhfV1KaY8nRi-bs\">Sonny Bono&#39;s visit to&#0160;<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rDkTlzvgNBg&amp;fbclid=IwAR2MMahuU8UOZpa_LDtn1A1l2E8gMVU9ldJgxyBdnhgoVhfV1KaY8nRi-bs\">The Bob Costas Show<\/a>.&#0160;<\/em>It&#39;s interesting to revisit this post&#0160;<em>The Cher Show&#0160;<\/em>revelations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alks about how Sonny &amp; Cher can cause a media frenzy together that they never can by themselves (even into the 1980s). &quot;Ten times our impact when we&#39;re together,&quot; he says. He&#39;s talking about the frenzy they created on David Letterman&#39;s show. But there was also frenzies prior: when Cher attended the opening of his first restaurant, when they appeared on other show together. They did seem to be a sum bigger than their parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that was probably true until the day he died. Then, as I\u2019ve argued, you could see a shift in her personal impact, as if she inherited the Sonny &amp; Cher brand fully and was creating the frenzy alone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one sentence, Sonny says Cher would have been a phenomenon without him (due to her drive) and then minutes later tells the media frenzy story.
