But then I can generally say I didn&#8217;t like the guitar solos from the 1980s. Cher&#8217;s seem much more subdued than most of them. But all of them, subdued or extroverted, were kind of predictably dull in their own ways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lukather.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8691\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lukather.png?resize=300%2C294&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lukather.png?resize=300%2C294&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lukather.png?resize=676%2C662&amp;ssl=1 676w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lukather.png?w=696&amp;ssl=1 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For context, what I do like: I know there&#8217;s a lot of Lindsey Buckingham controversy (and I for one have checked out of Fleetwood Mac&#8217;s century-long drama) but here is an example of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MLcX4H28Zsg&amp;list=RDMLcX4H28Zsg&amp;start_radio=1\">a solo that gives me feels<\/a>. It&#8217;s always an unpredictable eddy with Buckingham and then I end up delighted at minute 3:42.<\/p>\n<p>But anyway, we would be remiss not to mention Cher&#8217;s love of the guitarist and the <em>Take Me Home<\/em> song &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4pRRURSA9uE?si=42Ml9qsA782LJvmd\">Git Down (Guitar Groupie)<\/a>&#8221; (1979) which had most of Toto on it, Steve Lukather (guitar), Jeff Porcaro (drums) and David Hungate (bass).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hugate-porcaro.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8692\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hugate-porcaro.png?resize=300%2C264&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hugate-porcaro.png?resize=300%2C264&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hugate-porcaro.png?resize=768%2C675&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hugate-porcaro.png?resize=676%2C594&amp;ssl=1 676w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hugate-porcaro.png?w=783&amp;ssl=1 783w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For a song about guitars and ahem, &#8220;living from lick to lick,&#8221; this guitar part feels a bit lowkey.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the solos are not allowed to upstage the Cher. JK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bass &amp; Drums<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some breakdown examples of bass parts in Cher songs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZqmpBSiH7HI\">Believe<\/a> (1998)<br \/>\n(by the way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/DaftPunk\/comments\/hnu6p4\/daft_punk_sample_in_chers_believe\/\">some Reddit people think the drums were a sample of Daft Punk<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Duo1Mw44zgY\">Strong Enough<\/a> (1998)<\/li>\n<li>Cher\u2019s version of KISS\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fahch597S-0\">A World Without Heroes<\/a> (1991)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a5z8g0ceBOE\">Turn Back Time<\/a> (1989)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1KGnBdJnJXU\">The Beat Goes On<\/a> (1967)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;The Beat Goes On&#8221; is, of course, the ultimate example, which reminds me why my favorite bass moments in Cher songs necessarily go back to Sonny and Carol Kaye in the 1960s:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HGm3utHvuQ0?si=NBlyxmA-eC3QXr1K\">Needles and Pins<\/a> (1965)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/BQa-KAQ6ahQ?si=biuRWM92evAB47ku\">Let It Be Me<\/a> (1965, which has the benefit of some great drums by Hal Blaine, my second favorite Cher drummer)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/aJYxvyWem4Q?si=pe-XP3-hUp6YOFrR\">Stand By Me<\/a> (1967, ditto above)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kaye.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8694\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kaye.png?resize=205%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kaye.png?resize=205%2C300&amp;ssl=1 205w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/kaye.png?w=467&amp;ssl=1 467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And researching this I learned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WreckingCrewFilm\/posts\/this-week-in-october-of-1973-the-single-half-breed-by-cher-hit-1-on-the-billboar\/1209720387849984\/\">the Wrecking Crew Facebook page<\/a> claims the iconic drums in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RQ0lpiXQ__Y?si=XQLAvTFJHJgSplmG\">Half Breed<\/a>&#8221; (1973) were also Hal Blaine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/blaine2.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8693\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/blaine2.png?resize=300%2C191&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/blaine2.png?resize=300%2C191&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/blaine2.png?resize=768%2C488&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/blaine2.png?resize=676%2C430&amp;ssl=1 676w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/blaine2.png?w=890&amp;ssl=1 890w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some people also think Hal Blaine did the drums in &#8220;Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/oqZ9RaYfu0U?si=wkDmDW18S7t9Myds\">see here<\/a>) but there are no credits publicly available for that one and I don\u2019t think it&#8217;s the most interesting thing about that song anyway.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hKJlZu_Fvp8&amp;list=RDhKJlZu_Fvp8&amp;start_radio=1\">Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves<\/a> (1971)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But the drums and bass of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9GyHz0Aa24o?si=7T9Bnzcfy2QeW7BH\">He Aint Heavy, He&#8217;s My Brother<\/a>&#8221; (1971) and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6ZP_T3iQQTI?si=_oH7XZ66lZ7h8XE0\">Somebody<\/a>&#8221; (1972) of that same year are quite another delicious example.
