He was promoting a 1979 album called <em>Rescue Me<\/em> and performing a song called \u201cFlashback.\u201d Merv thought it was an old song but Tom insisted it was brand new, \u201cnever before performed.\u201d I wondered if this was the song Cher recorded for her 1976 album <em>I\u2019d Rather Believe in You<\/em> and it was. Compare the two versions.<\/p>\n<h4>Flashback<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gI87DZwNcCI\">Tom Jones in 1979<\/a> (much more disco, without the piano)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vkor_bh0Kjs\">Cher in 1976<\/a> (love TJ songs but this version has more texture, IMHO)<\/p>\n<h4>These Days<\/h4>\n<p>Here\u2019s a good site about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/1934510\/gotcha-covered-these-days\/franchises\/gotcha-covered\/\">everyone who&#39;s covered Jackson Browne\u2019s song \u201cThese Days\u201d<\/a> including Gregg Allman and Cher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&quot;Cher recorded and released a Jimmy Webb-produced covers album, <\/em>Stars<em>, that attempted to steer her in a more classic-rock direction, but to complete commercial apathy. Cher\u2019s relationship with Allman might have had something to do with her choice of including \u201cThese Days\u201d to join the likes of Buffalo Springfield\u2019s \u201cMr. Soul\u201d and Derek &amp; the Dominos\u2019 \u201cBell Bottom Blues\u201d on the track listing \u2014 she didn\u2019t just pick a recent hit of his, rather, she gravitated straight towards one of the more mournful ones. The subtle pop-country-rock arrangement on her version of \u201cThese Days,\u201d which leans heavy on syrupy strings, still steps back just far enough to let Cher\u2019s voice stand out as something genuinely longing above the haze of schmaltz.&quot;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZT5ElNhFdDI\">Cher&#39;s &quot;These Days&quot;<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Gold Star Studio<\/h4>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/classicstudiosessions.blogspot.com\/2010\/07\/classic-session-at-gold-star-1966.html\">extensive blog post about that clip of Sonny &amp; Cher<\/a> at Phil Spector&#39;s Gold Star Studio in 1966.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2016\/05\/20\/cher-recording-studio\/#fC3AEH3Xiuqa\">Mashable also posted a series of pictures<\/a> of Cher looking like a sullen teen while hanging out at the studio.<\/p>\n<h4>Sirens<\/h4>\n<p>And where have I been but I just discovered the original version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XqRZuDYhjNE\">&quot;Sirens\u201d by Nell Bryden<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>3614 Jackson Highway There\u2019s a 2014 book, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio: How the Swampers Changed American Music, by Carla Jean Whitley that includes some additional information about Cher&#39;s experience there in 1969.
