Two more articles last week:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/pdominguez\/keep-your-eyes-open-bitches?utm_term=.yeY55WmdVm#.wey00aw8Kw\">Cher Is Still Changing The Conversation In 2017<\/a> (BuzzFeed)<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cCher is still making headlines, after more than five decades in the spotlight, because she\u2019s never stopped finding and mastering new outlets for her creative expression.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The article talks about her \u201cfierce tweets,\u201d her \u201cCher-style viral disruption,\u201d her ability to project an expression of a &#39;real&#39; person, her outspokenness, her flamboyance, the way she \u201ctends to downplay her hard work,\u201d her history as a fashion trend-setter, a comedian, an actor, a \u201ccross-genre, cross-generational pop artist,\u201d her ability for \u201cgenerating memes and moments for decades\u201d and \u201cmeme-generating outfits.<\/p>\n<p>Um, meme wasn\u2019t even a word back when Cher was doing it.<\/p>\n<p>The article credits her for a style that \u201cthat would eventually almost become commonplace on red carpets.\u201d There\u2019s a funny quote from her 1970s manicurist, Minnie Smith, who said, \u201cWhat the hell different can you do with fingernails?\u201d They found something.<\/p>\n<p>According to BuzzFeed\u2019s culture writer, Pier Dominguez, Cher has a \u201creliable self-awareness\u201d and is able to maintain \u201ca kind of \u201cauthentic down-home appeal\u201d unfiltered and has become a \u201clarger-than-life movie star\u201d engaged in a \u201cdefiance of aging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He links to that crazy 1975 television <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KPlN8RBP-Ws\">duet with David Bowie<\/a>. This clip has become a popular reference point since David Bowie died. For years I\u2019ve never been able to decide whether these song mashups were brave or ridiculous. Probably bravely ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>And this NPR story by Desire Moses, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/09\/20\/552135954\/shocking-omissions-the-resilient-reinvention-of-cher-s-gypsys-tramps-thieves\">Shocking Omissions: The Resilient Reinvention Of Cher&#39;s &#39;Gypsys, Tramps &amp; Thieves&#39;<\/a> (NPR).<\/p>\n<p>This piece talks specifically about the song \u201cGypsies, Tramps and Thieves\u201d as a vehicle for Cher\u2019s \u201csignature contralto\u201d and androgynous vocals and that was a step away from Sonny\u2019s \u201cstraightforward, cheerful music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are reminded here that Cher lost a Grammy for this to Carole King\u2019s <em>Tapestry<\/em> (not too shabby). Moses explicates the song&#0160; as \u201da story of classism, sexism and racism,\u201d and Cher&#39;s performance \u201cwhose strength lies in her embodiment of the character.\u201d It\u2019s the story of a woman who has been \u201cshafted into the same life as the generations of women who came before her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I feel like a whole new generation has discovered this song.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCher\u2019s emboldened drawls [a perfect way to describe her singing style] transformed the song into an urgent, beguiling pop smash\u201d and \u201cestablished a pattern of storytelling reliant on exoticism,\u201d Moses says, in reference to \u201cHalf Breed\u201d and \u201cDark Lady.\u201d Moses calls Cher a \u201cred-carpet trailblazer\u201d and the \u201cposter child of 70s glam,\u201d an innovator one step ahead of the times.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#39;s statements, my Cherfriends, are <em>not<\/em> things that have been typically said about Cher by the press.
