The most famous Armenian superstar in the world is now winning icon awards and yet barely 100 years ago her ancestors were being slaughtered in the first modern genocide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cAny 20th century history of human rights and genocide must begin with the massacre of Armenians, then the largest Christian minority population of Turkey\u2026Between 1909 and 1918\u20261.5 million Armenians were massacred by order of the Ottoman Turkish government&#8230;Historians have called [it] the first \u201cmodern\u201d genocide\u2026the first instance of political mass murder made possible by advanced technology and modern communications.&quot;<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Siamanto<\/h4>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/cherscholar.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef01b7c8fb905a970b-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Siamanto\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef01b7c8fb905a970b img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef01b7c8fb905a970b-200wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 200px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"Siamanto\" \/><\/a>The first poet, named simply Siamanto, was himself executed on April 24, 1915.<\/p>\n<p>This passage from his poem \u201cGrief\u201d sounds eerily familiar in reference to Trump and those who have and those who have not, although admittedly on a much smaller scale than genocide.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cAnd this evening before sunset<\/em><br \/><em> all of you will go back to your houses,<\/em><br \/><em> whether they are mud or marble,<\/em><br \/><em> and calmly close the treacherous<\/em><br \/><em> shutters of your windows.<\/em><br \/><em> Shut them from the wicked Capital,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>shut them to the face of humanity,<\/em><br \/><em> and to the face of your god\u2026<\/em><br \/><em> even the lamp on your table<\/em><br \/><em> will be extinguished<\/em><br \/><em> by your soul\u2019s clear whispers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Siamanto\u2019s poem \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/voiceseducation.org\/content\/siamanto-beloved-armenian-poet\">The Dance<\/a>\u201d is absolutely horrific, a poem about a group of Armenian women made to dance naked in public until they were exhausted, then lit of fire with kerosene. The poem ends with Siamanto saying \u201cHow can I dig out my eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His poems were translated by Peter Balakian and Nevart Yaghlian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More about Siamanto<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yerevan.am\/en\/news\/bats-vel-e-arewmtahay-banasteghts-siamant-oyi-kisandrin\/\">bust was dedicated<\/a> in Yerevan.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2015\/4\/24\/1380101\/-Remembering-the-Armenian-Genocide-thru-Siamanto-s-Poetry\">Remembering the Armenian Genocide thru Siamanto\u2019s Poetry<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Vahan Tekeyan<\/h4>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/cherscholar.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef01bb099ea64f970d-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"3799\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341d6c7753ef01bb099ea64f970d img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cherscholar.com\/cherblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/6a00d8341d6c7753ef01bb099ea64f970d-200wi.jpg?w=676&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"width: 200px; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"3799\" \/><\/a>The second Armenian poet in the anthology is Vahan Tekeyan. He escaped execution due to being in Jerusalem on business and lived in exile until his death. I loved all his poems in the book.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/behindthelinespoetry.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/vahan-tekeyans-forgettingremembering.html\">Forgetting<\/a>&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/dissidentpoetry.wordpress.com\/2017\/01\/21\/prayer-on-the-threshold-of-tomorrow\/\">Prayer for the Threshold of Tomorrow<\/a>&quot;&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>Does this remind you of anything?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cLet the fortress of egos,<\/em><br \/><em> that huge barricade,<\/em><br \/><em> crumble.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The poem \u201cDream\u201d is about the dead coming back from heaven and \u201ca wolf slinking off, surprised to see his victims again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And &quot;The Country of Dust,&quot; is a great poem about being small and scattered and dispersed like dust:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cBut hope<\/em><br \/><em> rises like the sun. Accumulate. Dust consolidates into stone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His poems translated by Diana Der Hovanessian and Marzbed Margossian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More about Vahan Tekeyan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sacred-Wrath-Selected-Tekeyan-Armenian\/dp\/0935102094\">bootleg book of his poems<\/a> which must be out of print.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirrorspectator.com\/2010\/04\/14\/vahan-tekeyan-sixty-five-years-after-his-demise-his-vision-is-alive-and-growing\/\">Sixty-five Years after His Demise, His Vision is Alive and Growing <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>You can also read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Voski-Yerag-Vein-Gold-Anthology\/dp\/B00CR0MEAK\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1495475236&amp;sr=1-1\">Anthology of Armenia Poetry.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Famous culture critic Theodor Adorno once said there can be no poetry after the holocaust. This was often taken to mean there can be no beauty after such atrocities. But academics believe he really meant that there could be no poetry because the state would co-opt it for their own purposes. Carolyn Forche begins her anthology quoting German poet Bertolt Brecht, almost in response, who said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cIn the dark times, will there also be
