Ok so this project has been a few months in the making.

As background: Cher scholar Robrt Pela and I have been reviewing Cher albums via email for fun. We started doing this with the Sonny & Cher album Look at Us in 2014 and we’re not even out of the 1960s yet! Oy.

Recently, we made it up to the soundtrack for the movie Chastity and decided it was time to do a deep dive into the 1969 movie like we did for 1967’s Good Times.

Back in July I created Cher Scholar’s Guide to the movie Chastity. This is a scene-by-scene breakdown of the movie, along with trivia, what to look for and things the movie foreshadows in Cher’s career. There are also break-out sections on the writer and director, the soundtrack, the Phoenix locations, the movie’s press kit, the movie’s themes, the Cher themes it reinforces and an exploration of the movie’s title.

In the afternoons of August 2 and August 15, 2026, Robrt Pela and then I met for an online chat about the movie. Read the conversation about Chastity with Robrt Pela. We even get into a heated but friendly debate about female agency in the film.

I also published here Robrt Pela’s article “The Virtues of Chastity” from Cher Zine 3.

There are lots of surprises in this deep dive including explorations of things the movie does well and the best and worst lines and moments from the film.

One of my favorites: “You gotta have a thing to do a thing.” I have been using this in casual conversations. It’s very versatile for all sorts of situations:

“Can you pass me that thing? Thank you. I need a thing to do a thing.”

“Where is that thing? I can’t find the thing. I need a thing to do a thing.”
