Updates in Vegas, Love, Charity and Oprah

Cherx-large While convalescing (which entails staying away from the computer, sad to say), I went to see Cher and Barry Manilow in Las Vegas during the first weekend of May. My friends Julie and Dave and Nellie went with us.  The opening monologue still went on too long and generally confused Nellie, a Vegas singer and dancer. But the show as a whole was pretty great, especially with the new Bob Seger segment – a seedy rendition of "Fire Down Below" spliced with a fun-loving version of "Old Time Rock and Roll. Cher comes out as a male pimp/gangster (see Mackie sketch below…the real image of it is far more amazing, however) with a gargantuan feather towering over her head. Like in the video "Walking in Memphis" she nearly successfully sublimates her physicality with masculine motions. She appears tinier as a result. Just as when she does Elvis in the video. She quickly transforms onstage into a sexy redheaded moll in a yellow dress for the second song. Great sexy set and a creative and exciting performance. It steals the show for me. She sings "Love Hurts" now from the big pearl.

It was like a high school flashback to see Barry Manilow the next night. Actually, it was not my choice to see Barry. I've long lost touch with his career. But my husband chose Barry over a Cirque show, reasoning that Cirque will be in Vegas forever; Barry may not be with us forever. Since I was a pre-teen I've seen Barry quite a few times, including at the Hilton a few year's back when he first came to Vegas. His show at the Paris casino was very emotional for me somehow. Our tickets upgraded to the orchestra so I was closer than I've ever been and everything was much smaller scale and personal, including a lovely tribute the paintings of the Louvre.  He did a breath-taking (literally) rendition of "Weekend in New England" and no fans were asked to sing "Can't Smile Without You" for which I was thankful. It was very sad to think this may be the last time I'd ever see him.

But enough of that…Cher's Got a New Boyfriend!

Ron The news outing started here.

He's a comic and comic book writer. Here's his Wikipedia Page.

He had me at comics.

You can purchase his Ultimate Adventures book on Amazon.

He's also interestingly a Howard Stern co-hort and his dating  of Cher has been discussed on Stern's radio show:

HOWARD MIGHT DROP IN ON CHER

Howard looked forward to his weekend trip to LA, saying he might go visit his old friend Ron Zimmerman at his new girlfriend's house: "[I'm] probably going to go up to Cher's Malibu place and hang with her and Ron…Cher doesn't know anything about it." Howard joked that Cher would probably sequester him to a 'safe room': "Ron told me they have a special room for people like me at Cher's house. Like Ron's riff-raff friends."

Cher's New Charity Donation

Bedazzles a Dog to Help Homeless Pets

The one and only Cher is stepping up to help homeless animals this weekend in the Cherpetsbest way she knows how: with outrageous fashions and lots of sparkle! The pop diva is donating this crystal-studded ceramic dog to the Animal Foundation's Seventh Annual Best in Show event. Decorated with 11,520 Swarovski crystals, the dog will be available for auction, with proceeds going to charity.

The flashy canine was all the singer's idea, inspired by the glittery, sequined costumes of her current Las Vegas show. And though many Sin City headliners are donating similar works to the auction, Cher is by far the biggest name to participate.

Best in Show is a fund-raiser that showcases 60 dogs available for adoption from the Lied Animal Shelter in Las Vegas.

Josh and Cher on Oprah!

Oprah arranged a meetup between Cher and her huge fan Josh. I agree with Kitty's comment on the show positng: https://cherscholar.com/cherblog/2010/05/tv-alert-orpah-.html

It was very touching and I thought Josh was amazingly eloquent and possessed. Here is the experience in a nutshell (with a tiny bit of extra footage not seen on the show): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1xQb15ENtk

And finally, an astute Cher Scholar emailed me this clip of Paul Anka singing the song "Flashback" just like Cher sang it on her 1976 I'd Rather Believe in You album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5RzOlDE7mk

Speaking of album, many new Cher album rumors are flying, including one that Cher would sing a new single "Already Been There" on the May 18 World Music Awards. There was no hint of that on the WMA web site and not surprisingly it didn't happen. Cher is also stoking rumors that she will tour again to support the new album, rumored to be released in conjunction with her new movie Burlesque around Thanksgiving this year.

Cher in the Sun

Chersurfs Okay, so usually there's the ubiquitous paparazzi shot of Cher in a clown-white beauty mask walking to her car from a Beverly Hills health clinic or spa. In fact, I've been fatigued by all the most recent paparazzi shots. Are they really worthy of re-posting and consuming? But then these shots pop up this week: Cher on the beach (okay, not unheard of) but actually enjoying the water…what an anomaly! I almost can’t get my head around it.  There was that paparazzi shot back in the 80s of Cher sunbathing on a boat with her ass tattoo unveiled. These things exist, I suppose. It’s just not as common for us to see Cher frolicking in the surf as it is to see Cameron Diaz doing it. Beauty mask shot is much, much more common. Flipping off the a-hole taking the picture…not at all unusual.

Do you think we’ll ever uncover pictures of Marlene Dietrich or Katharine Hepburn in the ocean??

No.

Exactly!

Well, we did see Katharine Hepburn golfing, I guess. But I don’t think my astonishment has as much to do with the intrusions of the paparazzi, (which are granted and I feel an uncomfortable voyeur's guilt), as much as I am surprised with the idea that this is a sport of Cher’s time and she's partaking of it in spite of us.

It’s a weird moment of Cher being a media object and stubbornly refusing to be a media object. Of Cher being timeless (more and more becoming part of the secured rank of Hollywood's old glamor guard) and her being solidly, modernly of her time.

Oh, for Christ's sake, I’m starting to talk like Proust now!

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/bizarre/usa/2914350/Boardings-Cher-bliss.html#ixzz0jnknUAluChersurfs3

Cher has been caught having a fantastic time enjoying paddle boarding off the Hawaiian Island of Maui. Cher has a little trouble at times keeping her balance, but the pop queen ended up walking on water.

Walking on water? See? We jestly deify. We make timeless. Yet by paddle boarding, she stays in resolutely in time.

The Jam of Cher

Moonstruckmarmalade Cher's sweet tooth has spoken.

http://www.jammiesjams.com/index.php/cher-picks-jammies-moonstruck-marmalade/

Cher Picks Jammies “Moonstruck Marmalade

Cher has spoken, and she’s picked Jammies’ Moonstruck Marmalade as her favorite organic jam.” Jammies Jams taste like fresh fruit in a jar. Of course I am partial to “Moonstruck Marmalade” but they’re all great!”

There's a lot of love for Cher over at Jammies Jams. There's also a non-marmalade Moonstruck jam and Snapoutofit a "Snap out of it!" jam. Buy your set today.

I have a general question: what’s the difference between jam and jelly and preserves and the nebulous "spread"? Jam has seeds? Anybody? Is it me?

These flavors also look promising:

Paparazzi Suckage and a Rare Accolade for Sonny Bono

Wilson_Phillips-California First, an insane example of paparazzi molesting Chaz and Cher: http://x17online.com/celebrities/cher/cher_steps_out_with_her_son-02252010.php

Vulture-like photographers descend on them as they separately exit an art show on Melrose. It really shows the true claustrophobia of the situation.

Of course by watching this, you become part of the problem. The same photos can be seen on the Huffington Post. Sigh.

I've been a bit preoccupied with potential job loss, annoying battles with people here and there and other such things the past two weeks. On a slight bright note, I have been receiving some awesome Cher Zine 3 content that I am really excited about and I've started to write some poems for a new book. But it's been a stressful few weeks all around.

As I was driving to my job this morning, I listened to a Wilson Phillips CD my friend Christopher gave me as a gift for puppy sitting his two girls Zella and Kizzy. (He also gave me the awesome Nicole Atkins Neptune City album).

I do like Carnie and Wendy on TV (especially Carnie on Celebrity Ghost Stories, a show I absolutely adore) but I have never really liked the singing group Wilson Phillips. Their records always seemed passionless and vapid and their videos dull and mediocre. But I was willing to give their 2004 album of 60s and 70s covers a try. It was their first album in ten years and they covered not only their parents' material but Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, The Byrds, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.

Most of the album songs are solid misses. Flaccid remakes. Uninspired. Chynna does do a passable version of her parents' "Monday Monday" and the cover of "Go Your Own Way" is quite good, but I think that's more a testament to how freaking awesome the song itself is. However, the album liner notes by Mitchell Cohen made me do a double take.

We have gathered her to celebrate California. California music to be more exact…a myth that radio wrought, and everyone bought…

Blame Brian Wilson and John Phillips. While you're at it, blame P.F. Sloan and Jimmy Webb and Jan Berry and Jackie DeShannon and any number of Eagles and anyone who ever wrote a song that David Crosby sang harmony on. Not to mention McGuinn and McGuire and a few transplanted Canadians. They defined Southern California for anyone with a record player…

Getting Wilson Phillips to embrace this idea was one thing; getting everyone to agree on material was something else altogether. Right now you're looking at the track listing and asking, "Where are the Association and the Turtles and Love, the Merry-Go-Round and the Grass Roots and Johnny Rivers, Zevon and Newman and Nilsson? Where, for goodness sake, is Sonny Bono?

Wow! That is something. To initiate Sonny into this list of the major artists of the 70s and 60s who defined the California sound. You don't see that everyday. And it is really, really cool. And long over due. And part of a revisionist re-evaluation of Sonny & Cher's contribution to rock music. To not only include him in the list but single him out at the end…quite extraordinary.

It made me very glad this CD crossed my path.

Cher Sighting & a Week in the Life of a Burlesque Actress

Party The interview of the cast from Entertainment Tonight

Cher commenting on her young co-stars:  She talked about working with such spunky starlets as 20-year old Christina Aguilera, 29 year-old Kristen Bell, and 21 year-old Julianne Hough.

“It’s a hard job. You get up at 5am and try to look good. All these girls are a third my age. That is rough.”

But she had good things to say about Aquilera:

“I’m shocked but she’s really good. The other day we were hamming it up so badly, so old, like vaudevillian. She was keeping up! She was hot. Her game is good.”

I wonder what the moves of Christina’s game are? Because Cher’s game is pretty good.

And likewise, Christina Loves Cher too(no surprise)  What about the reported feud?

"I love Cher and I never knew just how much before I made this movie. I have always had tremendous respect for her. She is a woman who did everything before anyone else did it," she says. "She is an icon and she inspired me through some of my career. We've had similar costumes too!"

Hmm…I don’t really like Cher’s costumes being compared to anyone else.

In Burlesque, Christina plays lead character Ali who escapes from a small town and heads to Los Angeles where she dances at a neo-burlesque club run by former dancer Tess, played by Cher.

Co-star Kristen Bell said she liked “the relaxed attitude adopted by the Cher on set”.

Kristen – who plays dancer Nikki – said: "Cher owns the club and we play best friends, I'm her lead dancer and Christina sort of comes in between the two of us and I'm not very happy about that! I could talk but I was definitely having to take a breath and I was going, 'I'm in a room with Cher right now', but she's so personable and down to earth, it's not really what you expect, she's very easy to be around."

LA Times has a funny spin on the love-fest of the movie set.

Can't we all get along a little less?

Don't get us wrong, we love good vibes among star casts — especially the cast that upcoming "Burlesque" boasts: Christina Aguilera, Cher, Stanley Tucci, "Twilight" hunk Cam Gigandet and Kristen Bell. "Entertainment Tonight" got the first sit-down with the bunch, currently shooting the project in Los Angeles, and it seems even the film's headlining divas are playing extremely nice.

"The other day we were hamming it up so badly … ," Cher said of a group scene. "She was hot, she was really up there, her game is good."

"Heroes" actress Bell, her normally blond 'do a nearly jet-black mane, says the legend is everything she expected and more. "You don't get to be more of an icon than she is, and there are very few people who have that status. She so delivers in every way," Bell said.

No screaming or sabotaging of costumes? No tears or measuring of trailers? Let's hope there's plenty of  drama on screen! — Matt Donnelly

Later, Cher was seen (as pictured above) at Quentin Taratino’s party at La Vida.

News: Cher Homes and Burlesque Leaks

A Cher-Renovated Home Sells

I wonder if these Cher-houses have some kind of Cher-seal on them (maybe over the front door). You know, like an Oprah-selected book.

Cher has auctioned her newly designed home at Hualalai Resort in Hawaii for $8.72 million. Cher bought the land in 2009 for $2.9 million. Ka-ching!

Burlesque Song Leak!

Christina_Aguilera_2006_pr From the paparazzi hanging around the movie production to the constant news stories on comments from the stars to the “leak” of this Christina song the week, hype about Burlesque is HOT. Is it just the accidental zeitgeist of a cast and storyline we love or is rather good public relations? Who knows.

In any case, here is a hodge-podge of online commentary that surrounded the leak:

“Spotlight,” a new track for the Burlesque soundtrack, made its way to YouTube in full today after floating around for about a week as a very short snippet.

The track has a retro, throw-back feel much like Aguilera’s last studio album, Back To Basics, with big horns and finger snaps throughout. She teases with one catchy line stringing the movie and song together: “Get your ass up, show me how you burlesque!”

It’s a throwback to the 40s, spiced with touches of jazz, pop, blues, swing, and big-band. It isn’t new ground for Aguilera like it was back in 2006. But her voice fits those stylized retro songs so well.

“Spotlight” does, however, pique our curiosity about Burlesque — what decade is it set in? Will the film’s soundtrack will span various musical genres (as did Christina’s last major movie vehicle, Moulin Rouge)?. In any case, we’re stoked for November 2010, the movie’s scheduled release date…

… people involved in the making of the soundtrack is top-notch producers Danja and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart as well as singer/songwriter Sia Furler.

One story: http://top40.about.com/b/2010/01/27/christina-aguileras-spotlight-from-burlesque-leaks.htm

Most of the song links posted yesterday have already been taken down after studio pressure. Far be it for me to incur the wrath of that big business. But here’s the bad news for them: in the Internet century, once something is out, it’s pretty much out for good…like a sneaky little moth, that's hard to catch and pretty soon you have a zillion baby moths all over.

Search, my Cher-fan comrades, and ye shall find.

Cher Scholar received her first press release this week:

Cher Joins List of Notables in Library Named for Her, in Bali, Ind. / The World Is Just a Book Away

CHER, adding to her list of humanitarian efforts, has offered her support to The World Is Just a Book Away, based on her belief in the importance of reading and books. For the libraries opened in June in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, many prominent people who also support the organization's mission had libraries named in their honor, including Muhammad Yunus, Queen Noor Al-Hussein of Jordan, Jane Goodall, Desmond Tutu, Yo-Yo Ma, Miep Gies, Shirin Ebadi, Lois & Buzz Aldrin, Fess Parker, and the late actress Natasha Richardson.

The non-profit organization The World Is Just A Book Away supplies books, and builds libraries and schools for children in developing countries–partnered with the InterContinental Bali Resort to opened a school library in Bali, Indonesia, on Friday, Dec. 18, named for the worldwide entertainer Cher. The 'World Is Just a Book Away-Cher Library' is TWIJABA's first one in Bali. The Resort was intent on refurbishing the school and asked TWIJABA to do the library. Only a year old,TWIJABA opened its first 10 libraries in Sidoarjo, Ind., in June 2009, and a dozen more PLUS a mobile library will be opened there, as well, later this month.

The mission of The World Is Just A Book Away is to bring hope–in the form of books, libraries, and schools–to thousands of children in developing countries. The program was launched in Sidoarjo, site of the mudflow disaster that displaced more than 60,000 people and destroyed many schools. The libraries introduced the idea of loaning non-classroom books for recreational reading. The libraries also have educational DVDs for on-site use.

2009 results:

  • 10,000+ children will have access to books
  • 20,000+ books will be provided to children
  • 22 "The World is Just a Book Away Libraries" will be built
  • 1 Mobile library serving an additional 28 schools will be launched

Buy a Cher House for a Loved One

Cherhawaii1 Is someone on your Christmas list oh-so-hard to shop for?

Well, you are in luck because Cher is selling her Hawaii Island House: http://www.cherworld.com/news/?p=909

"Cher Didn't Sleep Here" was a popular theme in reports of this sales event:

"After building a house on Hawaii’s Big Island but never living in it, Cher is auctioning off the property."

Uh, people…isn't this like the umpteenth house Cher has remodeled and sold for shoe-money?

Concierge Auctions, which is marketing the property located at the Four Seasons’ Hualalai resort, anticipates bids between $8 million and $12 million. There’s no minimum bid, but there’s an unpublished reserve price that must be met. The singer bought the 0.76-acre property in December 2004 for $2.9 million and began building the house last year. A gated courtyard leads to the main house, which comes with an infinity pool overlooking the fourth hole of the Ke’olu Golf Course.

The main house is flanked by four one-bedroom bungalows and a detached media room. The property will be auctioned on Jan. 18. The resort, on the Big Island’s northwest coast, counts brokerage pioneer Charles Schwab and computer mogul Michael Dell among its residents.

Ooh. Who wouldn't want to live next to Charles Schwab? Good times.

At least with Michael Dell you might get a free laptop with your annual Christmas fruitcake.

Even Stars Feel Weather

Cher is cold All over America…it’s CA-HOLD! Even in our warm little paradise of Southern California. Look! Even Cher is cold.

Daily Mail commented she was “Looking less like an international superstar and more like The Pirates of the Carribean’s Jack Sparrow…”

And she’s shopping for shoes again. I myself hate shopping for shoes. But as the Zen Buddhists say, you must take care of your feet above all else. They are the foundation of your life.

Here is a blow by blow of the shopping expedition (it’s like the paparazzi is following Lewis & Clark. Do we need this much useless information?)

She and a friend headed into Beverly Hills where they stopped at department store Barneys New York, where a pair of long black boots caught her attention.

In true celebrity style, she kept her dark black sunglasses on but ditched the big coat as she warmed up during her spending spree, showing off a trim figure in snug velour tracksuit bottoms and a tight hot pink vest top.

Still without her coat, she dashed out to her stretch limo but battled with her scarf as she tried Shoes to pull it back over her face again.

Cher then visited a day spa for some pampering before heading to LAX International Airport where she flew off to Las Vegas by private jet.

The Grammy-winning singer began a three-year residency at the city’s 4,300 seat Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace in February.

Last Tuesday, she celebrated her 100th show and throwing a huge party for her crew. She hired the Las Vegas Pussycat Dolls revue girls to perform for her and her bandmates, dancers, acrobats and technicians at the Pussycat Dolls Lounge in Pure Nightclub at Caesars Palace.

Buzzfoto didn’t like the hat, but has self-awareness about living in a world of Cher hats:

Normally, we’d ask WTF was this star thinking for being allowed to go out in a hat like this, but since it’s Cher, we won’t even bother trying. Cher shopped at Barney’s yesterday. We hope she purchased something to replace that atrocity on her head.
